Common Questions from Our Dental Patients

Whether you're visiting the dentist for the first time in years or you're a longtime patient, it's normal to have questions about your oral health. At Conyers Family Dentist, we believe informed patients are empowered patients. Our team is always happy to answer your questions and help you feel confident about your dental care.

Here are answers to some of the questions we hear most often from our patients.

Why Do I Need to Visit the Dentist Regularly?

Even if your teeth feel healthy, regular dental visits are one of the best ways to prevent problems before they become more serious.

During your routine appointments, your dental team will:

  • Examine your teeth and gums for signs of decay or disease
  • Remove plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing can't eliminate
  • Screen for oral health concerns, including oral cancer
  • Monitor existing fillings, crowns, and other restorations
  • Offer personalized recommendations to help keep your smile healthy

Most patients benefit from visiting the dentist every six months, although some may need more frequent visits based on their individual oral health needs.

I Knocked Out a Tooth. What Should I Do?

A knocked-out tooth is a dental emergency, and acting quickly can improve the chances of saving it.

If an adult tooth is knocked out:

  • Pick the tooth up by the crown (the chewing surface), not the root.
  • If it's dirty, gently rinse it with water without scrubbing it.
  • If possible, carefully place the tooth back into its socket.
  • If you can't reinsert it, store it in milk or a tooth preservation solution. If neither is available, keep it moist with saliva.
  • Contact Conyers Family Dentist immediately to schedule an emergency appointment.

The sooner you receive treatment, the better the chances of successfully preserving the tooth.

What Should I Do If I Have a Toothache?

Tooth pain should never be ignored. While some discomfort may be temporary, persistent or severe pain often signals an underlying dental issue that requires professional care.

Until you can be seen by your dentist:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Gently floss around the affected tooth to remove trapped food.
  • Avoid chewing on the painful side of your mouth.
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed, if appropriate.

Do not place aspirin directly against your gums, as it can irritate the tissue.

If your pain is severe, accompanied by swelling, or follows an injury, contact our office as soon as possible. Our team will work to get you the care you need.

How Can I Practice Good Oral Hygiene at Home?

Healthy smiles start with healthy habits. A consistent at-home routine helps reduce plaque, prevent cavities, and lower your risk of gum disease.

We recommend:

  • Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Flossing once a day to clean between your teeth
  • Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and replacing it every three to four months
  • Eating a balanced diet and limiting sugary snacks and beverages
  • Drinking plenty of water throughout the day
  • Keeping your regular dental checkups and professional cleanings

These simple habits can make a significant difference in your long-term oral health.

How Often Should I Replace My Toothbrush?

A toothbrush doesn't stay effective forever. Most dentists recommend replacing your toothbrush—or electric toothbrush head—every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles become frayed.

If you've recently been sick, it's also a good idea to replace your toothbrush to help maintain good oral hygiene.

What If I'm Nervous About Going to the Dentist?

Dental anxiety is very common, and our team understands that every patient has different concerns and experiences.

At Conyers Family Dentist, we strive to create a welcoming, judgment-free environment where patients of all ages feel comfortable. We'll explain your treatment, answer your questions, and work at a pace that helps you feel relaxed throughout your visit. If you have dental anxiety, let us know before your appointment so we can make your experience as comfortable as possible.

When Should I Schedule an Emergency Dental Visit?

Some dental issues simply can't wait for your next routine preventive visit.

You should contact our office promptly if you experience:

  • A knocked-out or loose permanent tooth
  • Severe or persistent tooth pain
  • A broken or cracked tooth
  • Swelling in your gums or face
  • A lost filling or crown that's causing discomfort
  • An injury to your teeth or mouth

Prompt treatment can often relieve discomfort and help prevent more extensive dental problems.
